January 19-20, 2017 Refettorio Hall of the Chamber of Deputies Via del Seminario 76, Rome In this phase of history the “global migrant” is the new emerging figure. This “challenge” needs the affirmation of cultural differences, due to the various heritages of human groups, with their memories and identities. This conference aims, therefore, at redefining integration and social cohesion to favour the definition of new policies concerning times, places, sites, bodies and settings. We ask for a substantial support by all people engaged in politics and culture, to build a new cultural framework able to face the new global context. Policies move, and their movement makes things happen. But how do policies move? Who and what make them move? What happens as they arrive and settle in those “elsewheres”? What keeps them moving? Consequently, the present programme tries to provide an accessible but rigorous overview of transnational migration, as experienced by family and kinship groups, ethnic diasporas, immigrant associations and networks of entrepreneurs. Besides defining the core concept, it explores the implications of transnational migration for immigrant integration and its relationship to assimilation. The connections between the places of origin and destination as well as onward and return movements are an integral component of migration. Transnational approaches certainly have not yet inspired a coherent theory or set of theories. They, rather, can be more adequately described as a perspective that has entered the study of manifold cross border phenomena. This programme emerges as a response to the unsatisfactory state of both migration policies and theories. We also hope that Italy could become an example of integration between different peoples: a bridge between Africa, Asia and Europe, thanks to its geographic position, history and culture, and that it could help other European countries and U.N. member states.
